Three things decide a category draft: which categories you are willing to lose, where the value actually falls away, and which rounds pay for themselves. All three are computed below from Sleeper ADP and our per-game 9-cat values.
Elite sources are players inside the top 100 picks projected at least one standard deviation above the pool in that category. Few elite sources means the production is concentrated, so punting costs you little. Many means it is spread everywhere and giving it up wastes value in nearly every pick.
| Category | Elite sources in top 100 | Top-100 players who hurt you | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turnovers | 4 | 41 | Cheapest punt on the board. Only 4 of the top 100 are genuinely clean with the ball, so protecting this category costs more than conceding it. |
| Blocks | 13 | 40 | Middling. Punt it only if your early picks already push you that way. |
| Field goal percentage | 13 | 36 | Middling. Punt it only if your early picks already push you that way. |
| Steals | 16 | 31 | Middling. Punt it only if your early picks already push you that way. |
| Free throw percentage | 17 | 24 | Middling. Punt it only if your early picks already push you that way. |
| Rebounds | 21 | 36 | Middling. Punt it only if your early picks already push you that way. |
| Threes made | 21 | 22 | Middling. Punt it only if your early picks already push you that way. |
| Assists | 24 | 24 | Middling. Punt it only if your early picks already push you that way. |
| Points | 28 | 14 | Most expensive to punt. Value is spread through the pool, so conceding it leaks value in almost every round. |
Average total 9-cat value of the twelve players drafted in each round of a 12-team league, with the best value in that round. The steepest drop is into round 2, which is where the pool thins fastest.
| Round | Avg 9-cat value | Best value in the round |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | +4.34 | |
| 2 | +2.12 | |
| 3 | +0.92 | |
| 4 | +0.52 | |
| 5 | +0.45 | |
| 6 | -0.52 | |
| 7 | -0.35 | |
| 8 | -1.17 | |
| 9 | -1.91 | |
| 10 | -1.26 |
How many of the first 100 players drafted carry each position, and what they average. Thin positions are worth reaching for only when your lineup genuinely requires the slot.
| Position | In top 100 | Avg 9-cat value |
|---|---|---|
| C | 28 | +0.96 |
| SF | 35 | +0.25 |
| PG | 37 | +1.00 |
| PF | 39 | +0.25 |
| SG | 40 | +0.00 |
Put it to work: run a mock draft, check sleepers and busts for where ADP and value disagree, or take the cheat sheet into your draft room.
Deliberately conceding one or two categories so every pick can be spent on the rest. In a head-to-head 9-cat league you only need to win five of nine each week, so a team that is elite in six and hopeless in three usually beats a team that is average in all nine.
By the numbers on this page, Turnovers. Only 4 of the top 100 drafted players produce at an elite level in it, so skipping it forfeits the least depth. Points is the most expensive to give up, with 28 elite sources spread through the pool.
Yes. These numbers are 9-cat. Dropping turnovers (8-cat) makes high-usage guards materially more valuable, and points leagues ignore the percentage categories entirely. Our rankings page lets you switch format.
Much less than in football. Most leagues start several guards and forwards with multiple flex-style slots, and many players carry dual eligibility. Draft the best category value available and check position only when a required slot is genuinely at risk.
ADP is from live Sleeper drafts. Value is our own per-game z-score across the nine categories, computed from projections for the 2026-27 season. No editorial opinion is involved in the tables, so you can check any row against the rankings page.
